What UMATI does

Chama Cha Uzazi na Malezi Bora Tanzania (UMATI) is an autonomous, not for profit, non-political voluntary national NGO providing Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) education, information and services in Tanzania.

UMATI was established in 1959 as a Family Planning Assodation of Dar es Salaam. In the first years of its history the Association served people within the city perimeter. In 1960 the Association was officially registered and by late 1967 it became a national organization. In 1972 the Association changed its name to Chama Cha Uzazi na Malezi Bora Tanzania (UMATI).The Association has a long history of leadership in SRH programmes in the country, including pioneering in family planning (FP) services, Family Life Education for youths, and providing integrated clinic and Community based service delivery approaches. UMATI is a member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) and is governed by a well- established volunteer structure from the national to grassroots level. Since its inception, the Association has been responding to various national and international challenges for its growth. This move contributed to the accumulated experience in the provision of Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) information and services in the country. The Association has been reviewing and remodelling itself in line with the emerging challenges to move towards youth focused SRH services. Young people between 10- 24 years of age are the primary target of UMATI's services
